More Than a Popsicle

Don’t you wish you had thought of this? I mean, millions upon millions of people were lining up for these $2.50 pops at the [tag]Candler Park Fall Fest[/tag].  The King of Pops is smart and hunky.  Go get that “hand crafted popsicle” from him on the corner of Virginia and Highland (or other various locations.)

The Kirkwood Corner Market

 kirkwoodcornermarket1.jpg

So, I visited the new [tag]Kirkwood Corner Market[/tag] like two weeks ago and am just writing about it.  I apologize – because I really did like it!  What a fun, fresh, new shop located on Hosea Williams Drive next to Coan Middle School.  It is a true market – with groceries, fabulous retro candies, chips, snacks, fun gifts for kids and adults, flowers, and of course – a lunch counter.

They advertise themselves as “a nostalgic general store atmosphere that serves up baked breakfast goods, deli style sandwiches, home made sides, snacks and gifts”  which sounds a bit better than my first paragraph – but they are indeed all that!  I love the patio surrounded by plants and flowers and I love that they sell things like microwavable Chef Boyardee and you can microwave it right there yourself in the shop.

The sandwiches on the board were all very inexpensive.  I got a club sandwich, chips (snotty ones at that), and a wonderful fountain coke for less and 7 bucks.  It was a great club – nothing fancy about it – but I did not want fancy. I wanted a good club sandwich.  I got it.  I need to go back for breakfast – or to buy some Chef Boyardee.  Go visit if you live in this area – very walkable, the patio is dog friendly, and we need to support our local businesses!

Salem, GA

Ah, you wonder where Salem is?  I think there are like three “Salem’s” in Georgia, but the one we know is near Conyers – and we stopped at the local Chevron off of I-20 to use the bathroom after a long day on the lake.  Alley and Alison could not make it home.  Jennifer and I did not get a chance to enjoy the sites of the Chevron – because we were not as desperate.  Alison came back to the car and got the camera to take a couple of pictures in the Chevron…  They truly loved the bathroom sign and what would we have done without the 1980′s pantyhose?   I mean, really.

I can’t wait for a Piece of…

CAKE!  Hahah – you naughty minded people.  I am just very excited that , [tag]Piece of Cake[/tag] – the world renowned cake bakery in Buckhead is opening up a location on College Avenue in Decatur…walking distance from my own home!  They don’t just bake amazing cakes either – they bake cookies, cupcakes, brownies, chocolate covered pretzels, and more.

I am sure ouor friend, Karen, will be terribly excited as her favorite cake EVER is the Red Velvet Cake.  In fact, Alison and I have had to make a special trip there to get her the cake because her hubby forgot to do it for her birthday and it was like the only thing she wanted as she was a million months pregnant and craving it.  (Sorry, Fisher!)

Anyway, YEAH TO PIECE OF CAKE COMING TO DECATUR!

My Trip To Dilliards

So, I broke down and tried on a darn [tag]Spanx[/tag] bra today.  If you don’t know about Spanx, you are either a) not a woman or b) not up on current things.   Here is the story: [tag]Sara Blakely, a girl from Atlanta[/tag], gets tired of her panty hose back in the 1990′s.  She cuts out the feet of her hose, does a little stitching and voila, comes up with the idea of “footless body shaping Pantyhose.”  Well, now, this gazillionaire has a company that makes all sorts of things that are form fitting and comfy for women and she also is fabulous enough to run her own Foundation.

Anyway, so I tried the bra on reluctantly because they cost $62.00 friggin dollars…but alas, it was amazing and I can’t imagine life without it now.  Okay, that was a bit dramatic, but it feels great.   Go buy one – that is if you are a woman or a man who needs one.

The second part of the story goes like this:  I am in line at the Dilliard’s Intimate Clothing Department when I get into this conversation with a lady who is discussing interest rates on credit cards.  And man, is she mad!  She tells me about a Chase card that she has that she has really no balance on it – and they keep charging her a monthly bill of $1.00.  Now, I don’t understand this whole explanation – but I do know she lets me look at the bill and I am horrified that this lady has a credit card from Chase where the interest rate has gone up to 239% . Yes, you read that correctly.  I could not believe the APR on this card was that high!  So, I took a picture of it and here it is.   Moral of story, keep tabs on your credit card and what they are charging you – especially if you do not spend a lot on it right now.

*Sorry about the focus of the camera. I was shaking at the thought of an APR this high!

Abita Beer and Homemade Pickles – Yum

parish-bar.JPG

On a whim – while driving on Highland, the completely re-developed strip in Inman Park Ashley and I decided to drop in to one of the new [tag]Atlanta restaurants[/tag] on that road – [tag]Parish Foods and Goods[/tag]. Not Perish – as in death, but Parish – as in the geographic boundaries used in Louisiana that most states call “counties.” It took me a few minutes to put this together, despite being a native Louisianian….here’s the story and review.

I had not heard of this place so I walked in without any expectations. The interior is great – a brick office building from the early 1900s with exposed brick walls, open spaces, and great old tin roof tiles. Downstairs is the gourmet store/deli/coffee shop with fresh pastries (pistachio crème brulee anyone?), meats, snotty bottled drinks and fresh sandwiches and salads. The downstairs area is open all day. Oh – and the pastries are half price after 6pm – according to the bartender.

Ok – back to dinner. We sat upstairs in the main restaurant at the bar. It was there that I finally realized this was a restaurant shooting for the Louisiana vibe – they have an excellent selection of [tag]Abita beer on draft[/tag]. If you have not had beer on draft – it is a great microbrewery from Abita Springs, Louisiana that uses fresh spring water and it is some of the best beer in America. If you like wheat beer – the Purple Haze is a flavorful burst of raspberry and wheat. If you prefer a more stout-like feel, go for the Turbo Dog – light but dark. High gravity? AndyGator. Lager – go with Abita Amber – smooth and tasty. Non-alcoholic? Abita Root Beer on draft is one of the best things you will ever drink. Parish offers an Abita Root Beer Float that sounds superb. Maybe next time.

This time we went with signature cocktails followed by an Abita Amber. Oh – and to eat – the Chef’s seafood sampler and shrimp burger. The sampler was a nice mix of crawfish empanadas, some oyster thingy, a nice broiled fish, and other stuff. The shrimp burger was tasty and delicious – small and on French bread with a side of home-made potato chips and a homemade pickle. The chips were skip-able, the pickle was grand.

As the bartender pointed out – Parish isn’t trying to be some “Cajun” joint – they are going for a more upscale “Creole” feel. In other words more uptown New Orleans than downtown Lafayette. But don’t go searching for some Creole owner whose Momma still speaks French. This fancy joint is just another exquisite space with pretty good food by your friends at Concentrics Restaurants who have brought us One Midtown Kitchen, Two Urban Licks, and Trois. We found the service – great, the food – yummy, the specialty cocktails tasty (and affordable), and the drink list on a brown paper bag appropriately snotty-cheap.

Le Petit Marche’ (The Little Market) Rocks

brutusandlittlegirlatlepetit.jpg Brutus and Little Girl wish they could enjoy The Little Market as much as I did…

I have always wanted to open a great market that serves sandwiches and snotty things like cheeses, olives, lotions, and fabulous honey, but alas, I have never done it. Well, thank goodness, Ms. Marchet Sparks has! Alas, [tag]Le Petit Marche[/tag]‘ is located on Hosea Williams Drive at the Kirkwood Station and I hopped in for lunch today.

The place is immaculate and I am guessing it will stay this way. You are surrounded by local teas (they have one each day you can taste), olives, cheeses, Oliviers & Co. balsamic vinegars, Italian pastas and sauces, biscuits, hand creams and lotions, fresh truffles in a small cooler! and the list goes on and on. Oh, and you can easily pick up fresh organic milk, soy milk, bacon, or hummus among other things in the fridge. I do wish she will have wine one day to compliment the great selection of cheeses, but she may opt out of dealing with getting that license from the City!

Anyway, you can sit at the cute Provincial French looking tables as you enjoy your sandwich, soup, or salad. The menu is not large, but right on. The soup today was a broccoli, cheese and potato soup with turkey sausage and I will say it was to die for. It possibly was the best creamy soup I have ever had. My half turkey sandwich was nice as well with thick slices of very good turkey, provolone cheese, and a nice mild mustard. I listened to the cool French Fusion music as I ate and enjoyed watching people walk in to peruse the store. Other sandwiches include a Cuban which I hear is great, a greek roast beef, and a tuna salad. (There are more, you just must go visit yourself.)

I am delighted to have this near my home and intend to walk there for a great lunch time and time again. Kirkwood and the surrounding neighborhoods should be so excited that this Little Market has come to town. Go visit and enjoy -and buy a lot! (Open Mon-Thurs. 11am-7pm / Fri., Sat. and Sun. 11am-8pm)
