Cuerno Hits Midtown

This hip new(er) spot from the [tag]U Restaurant Group[/tag] in Midtown was packed on Saturday night when we arrived with our party of 8.  The neighbors in the condos above were out on their balconies having cocktails, complaining of the building wide smoke alarm that the restaurant, [tag]Cuerno[/tag], had set off – one of many times this has happened we were told.  But for those of us crammed into this tiny restaurant, we were grateful there was no fire as we would have had a hard time getting out of our chairs.

The space is very nice – complete with an anatomically correct large metal bull  sculpture and some big-ass chandeliers.  As we looked around the place, the staff was hard at work gathering extra chairs from some undisclosed location in order to convert our 5-top into an 8-top.  Good thing we like each other and do not mind touching strangers because we were all packed in there real tight.

We ordered two pitchers of Sangria which was very tasty and the fruit in the Sangria could put you on the floor.  We got a variety of tapas items which included tuna tartar, hot peppers, potatoes, mussels, a beet salad, and an “Americana Paella.”   The best items were the tuna tartar and the beet salad -oh, and the Paella.  The rest of the food can be summed up in one word – okay.  The potatoes were yawn yourself to death boring and I know they are just potatoes, but the sauce was lame and there was nothing tasty about them.  The mussels were nice, but really just okay.  It was all just okay.

The crowd was a great eclectic mix of sexy people, tourists, and locals. The service was not bad at all considering they had to practically jump over people to get to each table and the price was very reasonable.  It was an enjoyable evening out with friends – but I can think of better places to go get tapas next time.

The Chick-fil-A in Yes, The OTP

So, Andrew, I did really go outside the perimeter today for a closing in Kennesaw.  On my way, I stopped at the [tag]Chick-fil-A on Barrett Parkway[/tag].  Let me just say this experience was a bit surreal.  First, I walk in and go to wash my hands in the ladies room, and there I find, not just toilets and a sink, but mouthwash, fresh plants and flowers, lotion, tampons (if needed) and air freshener.  What?  Where am I?  Am I in a 4 star restaurant?  No, I am at the friggin Chick-fil-A.

I am ordering at the counter where everyone is smiling like crazy because they seem to enjoy their job so much, and then as I get my food, a gentleman, Ralph Stephens, offers me a fork for my coleslaw, then offers to take my tray to a table outside and tries to get napkins for me. Jesus.  He and I chatted, and he indeed is the owner of this fine establishment.  This guy ain’t fooling around.  This little chain location rocks.  I did notice that for once, a Chick-fil-A was not playing contemporary Christian rock.  In fact, he was playing oldies but goodies.  I had often wondered if the franchises had to play Christian rock, but Ralph told me no.  Good to know.

Anyway, if you are ever at the [tag]Target on Barrett Parkway[/tag], stop in to visit Ralph and his fabulous restaurant – and certainly make time to wash your hands in the “powder room.”

Oga’s Restaurant. Yes, That Is The Name

ogas1.JPG

From time to time I have to go out to OTP (oh no!) to get my wonderful Toyota Prius serviced at World Toyota along Peachtree Industrial Road.  I have often walked to the Waffle House, but it has closed down, so I finally tried Oga’s Restaurant across from World Toyota.  I was not disappointed.  This country cooking place owned not by country people, is worth a visit if you are getting your car fixed out here by one of the many dealerships.  I stopped by for breakfast and sat on a barstool at the counter.

I ordered the country ham and eggs (half portion) for $6.59, a cup of coffee and a water.  My half portion was huge and the country ham was delicious – as were the biscuits and gravy and the eggs and the hashbrowns…   I read my paper, listened to 107.5 who had Aretha Franklin on live and hung out for an hour or so until Stephen from World Toyota texted me that my car was ready.  (Ask for him if you go there.)

Anyway, I don’t know who Oga is , but I do know that the food is good. I’d like to stop by for the country lunch of “a meat and three.”    Also, if you are looking for work, they have a “Help Wanted” sign out front.

The Spice Market at the W Midtown

spicemarket2.JPG

You know you are getting old when you go to a fancy restaurant at 5pm, and they don’t open until 5:30pm.  Now, we had a good excuse.  Alison, Kristen, Michael, and I were hitting the new [tag]Comedy Show at The Vortex’s Laughing Skull Lounge[/tag] at 7pm last Sunday evening, so we wanted to have enough time to enjoy our dinner at [tag]The Spice Market[/tag].  But, it was not open.  So, we of course, sat at the bar and ordered drinks until it opened.

Located in the [tag]W Hotel/Midtown[/tag], the place is lovely and swanky and sexy and fun – all except what the poor waiters have to wear – some serious long shirt wrap around thing that goes to the knees with matching pants.  Very Indian looking, but in purple.  Not buying it.  The decor is spot on and the lamps give a nice hue over the place.

And then there is the food.  Everything we had was excellent – from the spiced chicken samosas and tuna tartar for appetizers to the cod with Malaysian chili-sauce (pictured) and the spicy Shanghai noodles for dinner.  The cocktails were yummy as well.  I had a lychee raspberry Bellini to start with and the others got a few of the ginger margaritas with fresh ginger and ginger salt.  If I liked ginger, I would have loved these.  All drinks were well made and worth the price since the ingredients were very fresh.

Had we had time, we would have stayed for dessert, but alas, we had to get to the comedy show – which by the way, is great fun.  Alison and I will certainly be back to The Spice Market.  We enjoyed walking through the W Hotel as it is sexy as well.  Thank God we actually got a little dressy to go out this night.  And I am sure the concierge and parking guys loved the red sheet for the dogs in the back seat of my Prius.  Let me just say classy came to the W!

Happy Valentine’s Day…You Look Hot

So, my only disagreement with this sign is this:  Why can’t women drink enough to make some ugly ass guy look hot?  Why does it have to be “till SHE’s hot?”

Just In Time For Holiday Weight Gain…

In case you would like to gain even more weight and decide you are done with the turkey and dressing this holiday, you can head on over to [tag]Ms. Annie Price’s Burger “Shack”[/tag] at 1615 Memorial Drive.  If you go, you must get the world famous (seriously folks-it is world famous) [tag]Ghetto Burger[/tag] – but be prepared to have two or three friends help you eat it.

Alison, Brutus, Little Girl and I hope you have a safe and wonderful Christmas or Hanukkah and look forward to writing for you in the New Year!

Edgewood Avenue’s New Italian Deli and Bar

nonis1.JPG
The delicious cocktail at Noni’s.

My favorite street in Atlanta has always been Edgewood Avenue.  I love the brick buildings, the historical look of it, and I don’t know, I just love it.  So, there are a lot of new restaurants / shops popping up all over the place and I promise to write about each one.  In the meantime, “Girl’s Night” was held at [tag]Noni’s on Edgewood[/tag] this past Monday night and we had a great meal and fabulous service…

We all started off with cocktails (except Cille who is knocked up and expecting in January I believe) and the liquor selection was great -good gin and vodka selections.  Our waitress, Sarah- with an “h,” was fabulous, flirty to perfection, and very knowledgeable about everything on the menu.  Sarah told us all about the antipasti dishes and pastas in great detail and then let us know what we should get.  We did not argue.

We started with the three salads on the menu – the caesar, the caprese, and the arugula and we got the Cannellini Bean puree which was excellent.  The caprese was exceptional, the caesar was grand and I don’t like arugula so someone else will have to comment about that.

My favorite main dish was my own – which rarely happens!  I got the pancetta cream over farfalle pasta with a side of fennel sausage.  The sausage was so not needed, but was excellent in taste.  The dish was huge and could be split between two people.  Cilli got the spicy bolognese with the famous meatballs (damn, girl) and I can’t remember what pasta was under it.  Hers was magnificent as well but the meatballs really made the difference on that dish.  Alley and Elizabeth split the chicken and eggplant parmesan and it was very nice and not too heavy.  My least favorite was Lea’s dish.  (Sorry Lea but I think she would say the same thing.)  Her lemon anchovy over the homemade tagliatelle was just too bland.   It tasted , well, like lemon and anchovy, but I guess I thought it would “pop” a little more.

Cille’s gorgeous meatball dish.

All dishes are very reasonably priced -around 10$ to 14$ and if you go, you must get the tiramisu for desert.  Yum yum.  We enjoyed our girl’s night there and I will certainly be going back! Oh, by the way, ask for Sarah and I am sure she will take good care of you.

Euphoria for Yoforia

yoforia1.jpg

I haven’t been this excited about frozen yogurt since it was cool- like 1991.  But frozen yogurt is making a comeback in Atlanta through the yummy goodness of [tag]Yoforia[/tag].  Made with only organic milk and organic yogurt, this stuff is blissful.  I don’t know if “active cultures” are a good thing, but they sure as heck taste good.

This frozen goodness comes in cool flavors – the most standard is plain which is like vanilla but with a hint of lemon juice in it.  Other flavors include blueberry, green tea, and pomegranate.  You can get 3 toppings for one price (but you don’t necessarily have to get 3- you are just paying for up to 3)  and the toppings are magnificent…from fresh berries, to chocolate, to cereal!   And you get tons…

Ashley and I split a small size which quite frankly is plenty for us, but we have heard stories of small people gobbling up a large  – which is huge! Anyway, go get some Yoforia.  It is worth waiting outside (like we did) one Sunday morning until it opens!

La Tavola Me Anytime…

antpasto-at-lt.JPG
The almost eaten antipasto platter at La Tavola.

Alison and I love good restaurants and we know there are quite a few in the city, but there are only a handful that truly impress me each and every time I go – and one of these is [tag]La Tavola Trattoria[/tag] in the Virgina Highlands.  Considered by me to be the [tag]Fifth Group’s best restaurant[/tag] in town, everything is impeccable – from the service, to the lighting to of course the food.  Now, before I go on, I will tell you that I can talk all day about how dinner was last night, but really, I am going to be discussing a certain person who works at La Tavola…

My mom and I went last night as she is in town and Alison is in Cajun country for her 15th year high school reunion.  No, I did not go to Gonzales LA for Alison’s 15th reunion (who has one of those anyway???) and know I am a bad partner.  Anyway, I digress.  I took mom to La Tavola last night – well, she took me there – and we sat at the bar because I have a good friend, Alli Soble, who bar-tends there(and I am convinced helps run the place.)  I was surprised to see the bar filled almost to capacity with people eating at 6:30pm last night – considering the rest of the place was still a bit slow.

Ah, but I soon learned that Alli has a following.  Oh does she.  Alli has a following of lovely ladies who come and spend time (with or without their partners) to eat at La Tavola and chat with Ms. Soble.  I think that while mom and I were there, at least 6 ladies walked up to sit at the bar. Two got turned away because there was no room at the bar (but plenty of room in the restaurant) but they left because they could not sit there!

mom-and-me-at-lt.JPG

While we were enjoying watching all of this take place around of, the food came and went.  We started with the antipasto plate which is large enough for 3 people.  Mom and I shared a caesar salad and got one of the amazing ravioli dishes.  (I’m not telling which one because it has beef and veal in it – which I have said I have stopped eating…)  We also got two desserts which were to die for – mine a chocolate creation and mom a lemon cake creation.

So, as the place filled up to capacity, Alli still had plenty of her followers lined up waiting to get the bar.  Now, all of course were not gay women, but alas, I think all of them wanted to be... So, in the end, if you sit at the bar or not, you will hopefully enjoy your experience here as much as we always do.

HOLY TACO-We Got Kicked To The Curb

salsa-at-holy-taco.jpg
The “eh, it’s okay” salsa in disposal containers at Holy Taco.

We have heard great things about [tag]Holy Taco[/tag] in East Alanta Village, but we never got to the taco-eating part during our first and last visit – we were basically dismissed by management.  A first for us.  What did we do to warrant such a diss, you ask?  Be patient – it is a slightly long story…

We walked up to Holy Taco on Saturday afternoon – about 30 minutes before the start of the [tag]East Atlanta Village Strut Parade[/tag].  We were told to “sit anywhere [we] liked.”  There was no hostess.  We scoped the patio – the available options included 2 small 2-tops in the sun or one 5-top round table with a nice umbrella where 2 guys were paying their bill and leaving.  We opted for the shade.  It wasn’t crowded and we planned on eating and then heading out to watch the parade.

Our waiter came by, we ordered beers and then 3 tacos and some $6 chips and salsa.  All was well. Then, in the middle of sipping our beers, and after we had been there for over 15 minutes, the waiter came back and told us that his manager has told him our table must be saved for a larger party and that we will need to move.  We said we would be glad to move if we could take our umbrella to one of the sunny 2-tops.

We heard nothing else until another 15 minutes later when we were almost done eating our chewy chips and mediocre salsa when the manager (?) (I assume b/c she never introduced herself) came by and physically took the food from in front of us and informed us we were being moved (without our consent) to a 2-top in the shade which had become available.  She said she needed our table for a large group.  In shock, we complied and followed her to the corner table across the patio.  Then I told her that never in my life had I been forcibly removed from my seat in the middle of a meal and that although I understood the need to maximize seating, we had been told to “sit anywhere” and that 2 people had previously occupied the same table without an issue.  She got defensive and sarcastically said that she was “sorry” we had been so misinformed.  Really? If you don’t want 2-tops at 5-tops, get a friggin hostess.  And if you realize this error after 2 customers have sat down, ordered, and started eating-it is your bad you sat them there and you suck it up or you ask them nicely to move and offer them a beer or something!  You NEVER force customers to chase their bowl of weak- ass salsa to a new table so you can cram in a few more guests on your patio.

Since our complicated order of 3 tacos was not ready at this point (about an hour at this point) we chose to relieve Holy Taco of the burden of having us as customers.  They quickly got us our incorrect bill, and we walked on to the Australian Bakery where they were actually happy to take our money and serve us.
