More Than a Popsicle

Don’t you wish you had thought of this? I mean, millions upon millions of people were lining up for these $2.50 pops at the [tag]Candler Park Fall Fest[/tag].  The King of Pops is smart and hunky.  Go get that “hand crafted popsicle” from him on the corner of Virginia and Highland (or other various locations.)

Little 5 Points Halloween Parade Is A Must

littlefivehalloween.jpg

It is certainly the second best parade (sorry, I still love Dragon-Con the best) in Atlanta.  This Saturday, the [tag]Little Five Points Halloween parade[/tag] is coming to town.  Get there early if you want a fabulous spot watching hearses carrying headless bodies around.  The parade starts at 4pm.  But don’t forget there is a whole weekend of events.

Seriously people, don’t miss out on going down to L5P for this. Little Five is known to be a bit alternative, but when it is this time of the year, it gets down right wacky.

(Please check out this fun video made by Rob Downs from last year’s parade to get you in the mood!  It rocks!)

Luke, I Am Your Father…

My fellow Atlantans, the time has come again – [tag]Dragon Con 2009[/tag] is here.  This year, friggin WILLIAM SHATNER will be in attendance.  Seriously, if you have not gone to this event (at least the parade) you are completely missing out.  There are not many days of the year in this city when you can see a wookie, a fairie, Batman, Catwoman, a stormtrooper, and Harry Potter walking together on the streets of Atlanta.

And this year brings even more fabulous surprises.  On [tag]Sunday, September 6th at 7pm, Dragon Con peeps will be attempting to break the WORLD RECORD for the most people dancing simultaneously to Michael Jackon’s Thriller[/tag].  I mean, seriously.  Nothing – I mean, nothing can prepare you for this event.  My mom is visiting this weekend – and she will be attending for the first time (much to her dismay or happiness!)

Brutus ALWAYS gives this event 4 massive paws up. (Last year, he got so excited, he fainted during the parade…)

The Inman Park Festival

This festival sucks.  Do Not Go.

Actually, the [tag]Inman Park Festival[/tag] is one of (if not the) best Atlanta in-town neighborhood festivals.  The only real negative is that everyone knows this and drives from the burbs down to Inman Park to pack the streets like sardines.   So,take Marta if you decide to go.  There is no where to park  – I am serious.  No where.  So, this is why I selfishly try to limit attendance.  But you really should experience this festival.  It has the most unique and diverse compilation of artists (musicians, potters, sculptures, painters, photographers, dancers, balloon-makers, etc…) than most of the other Atlanta festivals.

This year, you can check out the musicians playing bluegrass, Cajun, alternative rock, folk, or gypsy jazz – to name a few options.  And who could miss the opportunity to sip on a cold beer while listening to G-Force – apparently a pre-teen rock sensation?

So, go buy yourself a hand-crafted all-recycled wood wine stopper and some cutting edge photography and let the kiddos play in the park.  I think this year I will  make myself have even more envy of the people who can afford to live in Inman Park by taking the famous Tour of Homes.  Oh, and there is a parade – with human butterflies.  I mean, what’s not to love?

EAV Strut

There are just some festivals that go against the norm – and one of those is the East Atlanta Village Strut.  This one day festival brings out people from – its own neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods!  Wow, what a concept!  It is not actually “burb” focused and manages to show the true colors of the [tag]EAV[/tag] in all its glory.  I will admit, Alison and I live 5 minutes from EAV and we have never been to the festival.  But this year, we strutted down there, and had a fabulous time watching the parade, listening to live music, and hanging out with my boyfriend, [tag]Matt Wilder[/tag], and his lovely wife, Sarah, at his booth.

Here are some photos!

Rainin’ On Our Parade

baton-bob.jpg Baton Bob making a splash during the Pride Parade…

I mean, really? How many years in a row does the Lord need to provide [tag]Atlanta much needed rain on the day of the Pride Parade[/tag]? Maybe he felt as if all gays needed to get a little bit wet, but lightening and thunder? Eesh.

Regardless of the serious storm, Alison and I had a fabulous time hanging out in the Laughing Skull Lounge at the Vortex drinking Michael’s famous “Big Gay” drink – a mixture of rum, more rum, and serious fruit juices.

People stayed and watched the entire parade – even though some almost got struck by lightening. The usual floats were there including Delta and Swinging Richards and the Flying Biscuit had a great float with signs saying [tag]“Show us your Biscuits”[/tag] and someone in our party (not to be named-Rachel) did in fact show her biscuits which “won” her a Flying Biscuit t-shirt. Yet, the greatest part of the day was when [tag]Baton Bob[/tag] came prancing by with his whistle and baton in hand – in the pouring rain – and everyone went crazy. I have not seen him around lately and he is missed greatly, so this was indeed a treat.

Next year, I expect the Lord to give us a lot of rain for our drought, but save a sunny day for Pride!

Fall Festivals this Weekend (October 13-14th)

It is a bummer that two fabulous Fall Festivals are on the same weekend. I guess you could attend the Oakhurst Arts and Music Festival on Saturday and then pop over to Candler Park Fall Fest later in the day or on Sunday. Both have great music and good artist booths that consist of art, photography, jewelry, etc- you know, the usual festival stuff. If you have never heard of the musically talented Mike Geier and Kingsized, you must check them out at Candler Park on Sunday evening. They are the last act and start at 6:15pm. I can’t tell you how much he will entertain you. I also have a good friend (I call him my boyfriend) who will be selling his excellent photography at the Candler Park Fest. His name is Matt Wilder, and he is a cute, nerdy landscape architect with a hot wife and on the side he takes really good photos. A sample is below. So, this weekend, get out your house, stop watching so much football, and enjoy these two festivals in-town!
