Loss Cat Is Back

Since I have lived in Atlanta, the Loss Cat posters have been a big part of this city.  I remember noticing a lot of them in the early 2000′s – especially in and around Cabbagetown.  I have never called the number on the flyer – well, mainly, because I never found Speckles the Loss Cat.

This past week, the flyers popped up again in and around the Oakhurst area.  I finally decided to “Google” this and have now become a “friend of loss cat” on Facebook.  Who would have known.  It seems that Loss Cat fliers have made it around the United States and into a coffee table book.  Who made that buck I wonder?  Either way, Freckles, I hope you are no longer loss.

Priceless

Brutus and Little Girl love to be photographed with anything.

On The Screen Door, Part 2

Maybe I am crazy, but I 99% sure our Luna Moth is laying eggs on our screen door.  She has a little pod of 5 of them (photo above) and has now moved beside them and is no longer on top of the eggs (below photo.)  Does anyone know what will happen next?  Do these eggs just stay in my screen door or is some big boy Luna Moth going to show up next?? Ah! Nature freaks me out and amazes me!

On My Screen Door

I thought I would post this most fabulous Actius Luna Moth who has been hanging out on my screen door all day.  I think he/she hopped aboard the door last night and has not left yet.  What a gorgeous specimen!  We are pretty lucky to have one around since I think they only live about 7 days!

Enjoy!

I Could Not Help Myself…

I mean, it is not everyday that my favorite dog in the world is given a full page advertisement in a magazine…but this month’s [tag]Decatur Living[/tag] features Brutus and one of his lovely owners (me)…

Of course, the advertisement is NOT really about us…it is about the amazing [tag]Village Vets and the Animal Emergency Center of Decatur[/tag] – places where Alison likes to say we spend most of our money – which is kinda true considering that Brutus has a very sensitive stomach and Little Girl eats random things that cause her to almost die.   And then there are ALL the rescues we bring in….

Ah, either way, we love the Village Vets and everyone who works there.   Anyway, kudos the Village as usual – and thanks for making us famous!

Fred Cat

Fred Cat, my sweet (sarcasm here) 10 year old cat, has taken over Little Girl’s bed and is -in these photos-defending her turf as Little Girl tries to get back in her own bed.

Walk/Run your Pup for The Bridge!

Have you ever heard of [tag]The Bridge[/tag]?   I have because I have a couple of good friends who work there!  And I think they do spectacular things for troubled youth across Metro-Atlanta. They have even been around since 1970.

Their fabulous mission is to improve the quality of life and social functioning of Georgia’s troubled and abused adolescents by providing innovative community based and family focused services, specialized education and residential care.

One of the coolest things they do is to bring wonderful doggies into their program and use the pups for therapy.  The “Animal Assisted Therapy Program” works to help youth who have been physically and sexually abused learn coping skills and find a sense of security and comfort with themselves and others.  This year, they are doing a First Annual Run Walk Bark 5k Race/1k Dog Walk/Fun & Games fundraiser on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Brook Run Park in Dunwoody, from 7:30am to 12:00pm. [tag]Run Walk Bark[/tag] is a family focused and pet friendly event to benefit [tag]The Bridge’s Animal Assisted Therapy Program[/tag].  YEAH!

The 5K Run and 1K Dog Walk registration is $20 per runner/walker in advance or $25 after June 23. The 5k Run will begin at 7:30am. The 1k Dog Walk will begin at 8:30am and game stations will open at 8:00am.   You can form a team and raise even more money for The Bridge and the animals who help the kids so much!

They anticipate 500 participants in this first annual event to benefit The Bridge. Come and Run, Walk or Bark with them to help teenagers in Atlanta, or make a donation to The Bridge!  Brutus, Little Girl, Alison and I hope to be there!

7 Days Or Not

I rescue animals – especially dogs and especially pit bulls.  Yesterday, I went to [tag]Dekalb County Animal Control[/tag] to help rescue a couple of feral pups who had been trapped by Dekalb County Animal Control in our neighborhood.  We did not want them to be put down, but nor did we want them to be continue breeding.  Dogs who are brought in by Animal Control Officers have 7 days to live (to be adopted) before they are put down.  Dogs who are dropped off (especially puppies) by careless owners who let their dogs breed and breed and breed are usually put down immediately if they are too young to be placed with hopeful owners.

As I waited to fill out paperwork for the 3 pups at Dekalb Animal Control, an older man walked in with a box of 5 pit bull puppies (maybe 7 weeks old.)  He was told he needed to get his female dog fixed and the staff was very good with him and told him how and where these services could be done – free of charge.  When he left, they told me that the puppies would likely be put down because they were too young to be placed into homes.  These pups are lucky and have been saved after a day’s work on my behalf and on behalf of others who have as usual stepped up to the plate.

Yet, as I write this, two more sets of puppies have been brought in.  One set will be put down tomorrow – a full 11 puppies because an owner doesn’t get their dog(s) fixed.  What is the solution?  Fine the people who do not get their dogs fixed?  Help with free spaying/neutering (already done) or is it that we should educate more?  All I know is that a hell of a lot of puppies are killed everyday in Dekalb County – much to the animal control workers’ dismay I know – because too many owners don’t get their animals fixed.

Take a look at the ones who may not make it.  Friggin kills me.

Local Color

Walking Brutus and Little Girl in my neighborhood is always an adventure, but lately I have discovered a couple of new things.  The cat under the umbrella sitting atop a pillow on and old shelf is priceless.  And then there are the chickens…and peacocks.  Yes, that is right, peacocks…

I Can’t Help Myself…

I mean, I think I will at some point do a [tag]“Cutest Dog In Atlanta” contest[/tag] with a good grand prize or something.  Of course, if I do that, I will not let my own dog in the game since it is quite obvious he is indeed the most handsome dog in Atlanta.  So, let me come up with some prizes and then we will do a contest.  In the meantime, here is Brutus chillin in our backyard.
