Kudos!

I wanted to give kudos to the [tag]East Lake Farmers Market[/tag] which started off the season this past Saturday with great vendors and a fabulous collards cook off.  I am so proud of our community – especially Amy and Doug Williams – for doing this.  I hope that you will come out and support our small but great farmers market from May until October!  We look forward to having you!

While I was there on Saturday, I walked over to a booth that was selling some amazing looking macarons and other tasty treats.  The guy in the booth looked at me and asked, “don’t you write the [tag]52 Weeks of Drinks?[/tag]“ I about swooned in delight!  What I have been waiting for – I became famous in that one moment.  It was worth the sweat and tears it takes to drink those drinks…

I bought one of those macarons- you bet your ass I did – and it was excellent.  Get them online at [tag]Crumb- a bakery[/tag] – here in Atlanta.

Little 5 Points Halloween Parade Is A Must

littlefivehalloween.jpg

It is certainly the second best parade (sorry, I still love Dragon-Con the best) in Atlanta.  This Saturday, the [tag]Little Five Points Halloween parade[/tag] is coming to town.  Get there early if you want a fabulous spot watching hearses carrying headless bodies around.  The parade starts at 4pm.  But don’t forget there is a whole weekend of events.

Seriously people, don’t miss out on going down to L5P for this. Little Five is known to be a bit alternative, but when it is this time of the year, it gets down right wacky.

(Please check out this fun video made by Rob Downs from last year’s parade to get you in the mood!  It rocks!)

Luke, I Am Your Father…

My fellow Atlantans, the time has come again – [tag]Dragon Con 2009[/tag] is here.  This year, friggin WILLIAM SHATNER will be in attendance.  Seriously, if you have not gone to this event (at least the parade) you are completely missing out.  There are not many days of the year in this city when you can see a wookie, a fairie, Batman, Catwoman, a stormtrooper, and Harry Potter walking together on the streets of Atlanta.

And this year brings even more fabulous surprises.  On [tag]Sunday, September 6th at 7pm, Dragon Con peeps will be attempting to break the WORLD RECORD for the most people dancing simultaneously to Michael Jackon’s Thriller[/tag].  I mean, seriously.  Nothing – I mean, nothing can prepare you for this event.  My mom is visiting this weekend – and she will be attending for the first time (much to her dismay or happiness!)

Brutus ALWAYS gives this event 4 massive paws up. (Last year, he got so excited, he fainted during the parade…)

Alabama Gets Kool Korner Sandwiches

 kool-korner.jpg

We should be ashamed that we lost such a great sandwich shop – and now friggin Birmingham has old man Ramirez and his famous Cuban sandwiches!  How we miss those delicious and amazing and inexpensive Cuban sandwiches packed in a paper bag while we try to eat them on the dilapidated picnic tables out back. Ah, the memories.

Well, Alabamans – enjoy.  Maybe Alison and I will take a road trip.

What A Love Story

I spotted this in the Decatur/Oakhurst area.  Who is this guy?  Who is his girl?  SCHMOOPY!

Better Late Than Never

I forgot to post this after Michael Jackson’s death.  Our friend, Erika, took this fabulous photo of a poster that had just been put up.  It says “Keep Dancing” and I absoultely love the way the light of the sun is shining on it.  Enjoy.

Dining Out Wednesday Night, January 28th

Don’t forget to dine out at select restaurants on Wednesday night to help find the killer(s) of John Henderson, the beloved bartender from The Standard.  Restaurants are encouraged to give 20% of their profits that night to [tag]Crime Stoppers Atlanta[/tag] to increase the reward amount to find these assholes.

Please visit Atlantans Together Against Crime for a list of restaurants who are participating.  I am hopeful that more will sign up before Wednesday.

La Tavola Me Anytime…

The almost eaten antipasto platter at La Tavola.

Alison and I love good restaurants and we know there are quite a few in the city, but there are only a handful that truly impress me each and every time I go – and one of these is [tag]La Tavola Trattoria[/tag] in the Virgina Highlands.  Considered by me to be the [tag]Fifth Group’s best restaurant[/tag] in town, everything is impeccable – from the service, to the lighting to of course the food.  Now, before I go on, I will tell you that I can talk all day about how dinner was last night, but really, I am going to be discussing a certain person who works at La Tavola…

My mom and I went last night as she is in town and Alison is in Cajun country for her 15th year high school reunion.  No, I did not go to Gonzales LA for Alison’s 15th reunion (who has one of those anyway???) and know I am a bad partner.  Anyway, I digress.  I took mom to La Tavola last night – well, she took me there – and we sat at the bar because I have a good friend, Alli Soble, who bar-tends there(and I am convinced helps run the place.)  I was surprised to see the bar filled almost to capacity with people eating at 6:30pm last night – considering the rest of the place was still a bit slow.

Ah, but I soon learned that Alli has a following.  Oh does she.  Alli has a following of lovely ladies who come and spend time (with or without their partners) to eat at La Tavola and chat with Ms. Soble.  I think that while mom and I were there, at least 6 ladies walked up to sit at the bar. Two got turned away because there was no room at the bar (but plenty of room in the restaurant) but they left because they could not sit there!

While we were enjoying watching all of this take place around of, the food came and went.  We started with the antipasto plate which is large enough for 3 people.  Mom and I shared a caesar salad and got one of the amazing ravioli dishes.  (I’m not telling which one because it has beef and veal in it – which I have said I have stopped eating…)  We also got two desserts which were to die for – mine a chocolate creation and mom a lemon cake creation.

So, as the place filled up to capacity, Alli still had plenty of her followers lined up waiting to get the bar.  Now, all of course were not gay women, but alas, I think all of them wanted to be... So, in the end, if you sit at the bar or not, you will hopefully enjoy your experience here as much as we always do.

Random Meetings in California

lambert-1.JPG

Alison and I just got back from a fabulous vacation in California.  A few days were spent sipping wine in the [tag]Russian River Valley[/tag] where we enjoyed meeting people while “tasting wines.”  Our favorite winery, Lambert Bridge, has a connection to Atlanta.  Not only does Andy, the proprietor (true title: National Sales Manager) of Lambert Bridge, have a girlfriend who lives in Hotlanta (although of course she wants to move to the wine country,) but he also knows a number of folks here – including members of the [tag]Concentrics Group[/tag].  So, at some point in the near future, I am hopeful that I can get a bottle of Lambert Bridge wine from One Midtown Kitchen (since it is doubtful we will ever go back to Trois.)

Lambert Bridge is a gorgeous spot and the winemakers, Jill and Mitch, create fantastic wines in small quantities keeping this winery nice and personable.  We loved hanging out with Gus the dog, Andy and his dad and even got a personal tour of the grapes.  Of course we became members of their wine club so we can get bottles delivered to us. Thank God Georgia passed that law!

Anyway, that’s it.  Great vacation and great wine!
